It is in this important craft center of Japan where Lemnos began its production and designs over half a century ago.

Modernizing traditional Japanese crafts and techniques, Lemnos preserves, enhances, and brings these specialized manufacturing knowledge and human art onto the world stage— with Lemnos Clocks. Adhering to the founder Hiroshi Takata's statement made in an interview, "a clock not only indicates time. It is a masterpiece of craftsmanship and design. It is not a fading fashion; it is timeless." Thus, today, every Lemnos Clock is made from fine raw materials and continues to be Made in Japan by craftsmen and women.

From the Wood for Shrines

The UNESCO World Heritage Kyoto Kiyomizu-dera Temple built in 778 was made with Japanese Zelkova.

Utilizing Fine and Rare Raw Materials

Not just wood, the UNESCO World Heritage Site the Kiyomizu-dera Temple of Kyoto built over 1200 years ago in the year 778, was made entirely with Japanese Zelkova, the very same wood as the Lemnos Muku Zelkova. The Lemnos MIKI Clock is also made specially with the same type of wood.

Made from the Wood for Shrines and Temples

The Lemnos Muku Zelkova uses Japanese Zelkova that is specially sourced from the Japanese intra-trade market for wood specifically for the building of shrines and temples. Due to the important purpose of this particular wood, quality raw material of this wood specimen for making Lemnos Muku Zelkova Clocks is limited.

Made from extreme heat, it can take up to a week to create a single cast Aluminum Lemnos Edge Clock.

Lemnos Edge, Forged from Fire, Made for Design

Solid Aluminum blocks are heated to over 700 degrees Celsius or approximately 1300 degrees Fahrenheit to liquid molten Aluminum and poured into the Edge sand cast. After the raw cast Aluminum Edge is cooled overnight, the solid Aluminum clock frame is born from breaking the sand cast. The clock frame is then transported to a Lemnos metalworks craftsman for initial crafting, polishing, and painting. Depending on the projects at hand, this can take between 1 to 3 days until the clock frame is fully polished and painted. It is then transported back to the assembly line for final production.

Paper-Wood is a new type of plywood consisting of colored recycled paper and wooden sheets. The pattern appeared in edge holds the most colorful and beautiful looks that have never been found in existing plywood. The material was developed in 2009 by the Plywood Research Laboratory in collaboration between DRILL DESIGN, FULLSWING, and TAKIZAWA VENEER, a plywood manufacturer in Hokkaido Japan. Today, many designers and architects apply this new material to their various kinds of buildings and interiors. Lemnos explores the creation of design timepieces using Paper-Wood with DRILL DESIGN and the result is a new type of wall clock that uses colors to accentuate the fun and vibrancy of a space.

Thomson Paper with Mermaid (at Wayfair), an unique type of paper created in 1956 under the supervision of Japanese designer Hiroshi Hara (1903-1986) Mermaid is a kind of fine paper with felt mark made by a machine in Japan. Rich and vibrant color tones are transferred to Mermaid's paper surface by using special felt which has a woven design created from this type of paper-making. This paper was named “Mermaid”— the felt paper reminded designers of the gentle sea foams and ripples where mermaids play and live. Mermaid has various colors and thickness (ream weight) created under the supervision of a Japanese graphic designer, Ikko Tanaka (1930-2002) in 1999. It is mostly used as design paper in Japan.

Lemnos adopts the use of Mermaid paper to create the Thomson Paper Clocks based on the original Thomson Clock designed by Yuichi Nara. Mermaid is layered within the plywood clock frame as part of the plywood clock face. The Thomson Paper has a glass cover so the Mermaid paper clock face is kept clean and beautiful through the years.
